Congaree National Park – formerly known as Congaree Swamp National Monument – became South Carolina's first national park in 2003. The park is one of America's newest National Parks.
Congaree National Park comprises South Carolina's fascinating subtropical coastline of sea islands, great beaches, marshes and lush palmetto groves. The park provides a place to walk and relax amidst giant hardwoods and pines. Activities at Congaree National Park include hiking, primitive camping, bird watching, canoeing & kayaking; ranger guided walks and canoe tours, nature study, and environmental education programs.
The park has over 20 miles of hiking trails and 2 miles of loop trails. Colored markers make the trails easy to follow. South of Charleston, the coastline becomes marshy. Huge live oaks draped with Spanish moss line the roads and trails, beside bright green marshes with rich bird life and great beaches on the seaward side.
The landscape of the region is quite stunning; amazing views across bright marshes, and small shrimp and oyster communities can be seen. Occasionally you see what looks like a fleet of ships in the middle of the field, only to realize that in fact the boats are anchored in a small salt creek, hidden by bright green marsh reeds.
