The Kachemak Bay State Park is the only wilderness park in Alaska. It is in fact Alaska’s first state park. It encompasses about 400,000 acres (1620 square-km) of scenic land that has spectacular glaciers, panoramic mountains, thick forests, and an ocean. The movement of the earth’s crust is evident from the unique twisted rock formations found in the Park.

The State Park is known for its constantly changing weather patterns, and its stupendous scenery, which is a backdrop for excellent recreation. The Kachemak Bay State Park offer several recreational opportunities to its visitors. Some of the popular activities are boating, kayaking, fishing, hiking, mountain sports, and camping. Camping and hiking in the surrounding forests and mountains, and along the shoreline can be an unforgettable experience. There are several miles of snowfields and several glaciers above timberline for hikers and skiers.

Being a critical habitat area, Kachemak Bay also supports several species of marine life. Visitors can easily spot porpoise, seals, whales, and sea otters in the Park. Opportunities and natural settings for marine studies are available at the Intertidal zones. The land mammals found here include black bears, moose, coyotes, mountain goats, and wolves. Also, birds like gyrfalcons, eagles, and puffins inhabit the Bay owing to which the Kachemak Bay State Park is famous for bird watching.

Other major attractions in the park include the China Poot Bay, Grewingk glacier, Poot Peak, Halibut Cove Lagoon, Poot Bay, China Poot Lake, and the famous Humpy Creek. Other Park facilities include 80 miles (128.7 km) of trails for hiking; fireplaces, picnic tables, outhouses, tent platforms, and food caches to facilitate camping; public use cabins in some areas like the Leisure Lake, Halibut Cove Lagoon, and Moose Valley; public mooring buoys; Halibut Cove Lagoon Public Dock.

There are no roads leading to the park and therefore, one can reach the park either by boat or by airplane. Authorized water taxi services and commercial air charters and boat rentals are made available for access to the Park.
