17-Mile Drive

pacific coast along 17-mile drive

The 17-Mile Drive is a spectacular toll road running through the Monterey Peninsula. About half of it runs along the coast. Plan to spend approximately three hours along the drive. Sights along the drive include the following:
  • Spanish Bay, a popular picnic area along the southern shore of Pacific Grove
  • Huckleberry Hill, where fruit can be picked in the summer
  • The Carmel Mission
  • The Tor House, an impressive rock house built by poet Robinson Jeffers from 1919 to 1957
  • The Lone Cypress, one of the most photographed trees in the world
  • The Spyglass Hill golf course

Many large estates and mansions can also be found along the drive.
