Carmel Mission

Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, more commonly known as the Carmel Mission, was founded in 1770 by Father Junipero Serra and built of adobe brick by Native Americans. Until 1834, it served as the administrative center for all missions in Northern California. Father Serra lived in the mission until his death in 1784 and he is now buried at the foot of the altar. The mission was abandoned in 1834 and left in disrepair until 1924, when it was restored to its original condition. The mission is still used as a Catholic church.
Sites at the mission include a kitchen, dining room, Serra's cell, a bell tower, the chapel window, a museum, a cemetary, and an altar incuding Father Serra's burial place.
