Larkin House

Built in the 1830s during Monterey's Mexican period, the Larkin House is one
of the oldest buildings in the city. It was built of adobe-brick and redwood
by Thomas Larkin, a Yankee merchant who later became very influential in
early California politics. It was one of the first two-story buildings in
Monterey and served as both house and store.
Alice Larkin Toulmin, Thomas' granddaughter, acquired the house in 1922. In
1957, she presented it to the state of California as a historic monument.
