Mission
San Luis Obispo de Tolosa

This mission was founded by Father Junipero Serra in 1772 and is still in
use as a parish church. The mission also contains a museum with Chumash
Indian artifacts including baskets, vessels, and jewelry as well as Serra's
bed and the mission's altar.
In front of the church lies Mission Plaza, a public square with a tree-lined
creek running through it. In the 1860s, bullfights and bear-baiting used to
be held in the park. Just west of the plaza, at 800 Palm Street, lies the Ah
Louis Store, a Chinese building from 1874. Since then it has been a post
office, bank, and general store. It is now a gift shop.
