Pacific Grove
Pacific Grove is a beautiful small coastal town in Monterey County. It was
founded in 1889 as a religious retreat, where alcohol, dancing, and even the
Sunday newspaper were banned. Today the town is mainly known for its
Victorian houses, many of which have been converted to inns, as well as its
coastal parks and the monarch butterflies
which can be seen from October to April. An annual parade is held in honor
of the return of the coastal insects, which are protected by city ordinance.
Built in 1852, the Point Pinos Lighthouse is now the oldest operating
lighthouse in California.
Like Carmel and Monterey,
Pacific Grove has attracted numerous artists since the 1890s.
