The Point Sur Lighthouse is an active lighthouse off the Big Sur coast which is open to the public. Built in 1889, it is the only lighthouse in California from that era which people can visit. The lighthouse sits atop a volcanic cone.
From 1899 to 1974, Point Sur was a town centered around operation of the lighthouse. Now the lighthouse is automated and Point Sur is a ghost town.
The number of visitors to the lighthouse is limited in order to preserve a sense of isolation. Midnight boat tours of the lighthouse are given once a month. The boat holds up to 40 passengers.
