Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz is a fun small city on the northern tip of the Monterey Bay. It
is surrounded by farmland as well as the Santa Cruz Mountains, which lie to
the east. Much of downtown was badly damaged by the Loma Prieta Earthquake
is 1989, but it has since recovered, with new bookstores, art galleries, and
cafes. Exciting places to visit include the
Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk,
Mission Santa Cruz, the
Museum of
Art and History at the McPherson Center,
Natural Bridges State Beach,
the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum, and the Mystery Spot. Santa Cruz is also home
to UC Santa Cruz, one of the ten campuses of the University of California.
Cultural events include Shakespeare Santa Cruz, the Cabrillo Festival of
Contemporary Music, the Santa Cruz International Film Festival, the Santa
Cruz Blues Festival, the US Open Brazilian Capoeria, the Santa Cruz Digital
Arts & New Media Festival, the Santa Cruz Fungus Fair, and Santa Cruz Pride.
Santa Cruz has a history of liberalism and political activism. The city was
one of the first to legalize medical marijuana. Also, in 2003, the Santa
Cruz City Council became the first to denounce the war in Iraq.
