Ventana Wilderness

Located in the Santa Lucia Mountains along the central coast of California, the Ventana Wilderness was established in 1969 by the Endangered American Wilderness Act. It contains steep, dark ridges separating V-shaped valleys as well as streams flowing through boulders, waterfalls, and hot springs. Elevation ranges from 600 to 5750 feet (180 to 1750 meters) above sea level. There are marked changes in vegetation, due to changing topography as well as recent fires. Much of the wilderness is covered with chapperal, which is characteristic of much dry land in Southern California. The wilderness also contains redwoods and Bristlecone Furs. Animals in the wilderness include coyotes, jack rabbits, and the California quail.
