Devil's Golf Course
Consisting of hexagonal pinnacles of baked salt, Devil's Golf Course resembles Badwater except that it is completely dry. It is located 12 miles (19 km) south of Furnace Creek, off Highway 178. Various lakes covered this area until about 2000 years ago, when the last lake evaporated. Now the area consists of salt and gravel deposits 1000 feet (300 meters) deep and covering 200 square miles (500 square km). The surface consists of 95% pure salt. One can hear the salt expand and contract as the temperature changes. The newer salt crystals are whiter.
