Golden Canyon

Golden Canyon can be reached by taking a one-mile (1500 m) hike from a spot 3 miles (5 km) south of Furnace Creek along Highway 178. The canyon was named for its yellow walls, which can best be viewed in the afternoon. The canyon also contains red clay, which the local Native Americans once used for face paint. There was once a paved road leading to the canyon, but a large storm in 1976 eroded it away.
A hiking trail through the canyon is one of the most popular trails in Death Valley. Viewspots along the trail include Red Cathedral, a natural ampitheater, and Zabriskie Point, a spectacular viewspot.
