Village Green Heritage Center

village green heritage center

Located at 221 South Palm Canyon Road in Palm Springs, California, the Village Green Heritage Center is a living tribute to the pioneers who founded Palm Springs and the more recent inhabitants that made it the city it is today. It is a collection of four small museums, each of them celebrating the pioneer spirit and the flavor of the Valley life. Outside the center is a gorgeous fountain displaying water as the symbol of life.

The four museums are situated on the block that comprises the Village Green Heritage Center and each of them is open to the public and a popular destination for tourists. The McCallum Adobe is the home of the original settler of Palm Springs, John Guthrie McCallum. He moved to Palm Springs with his family and built the home in 1885. It is preserved in its original condition and serves as a holding place for the collection of the Palm Springs Historical Society. Hours of visitation vary throughout the year. Miss Cornelia White’s House was built in 1894 from railroad ties and serves to display Miss White’s collection of Bibles, the historical paintings of Carl Eytel, and is even home to the first telephone in Palm Springs.

Ruddy’s General Store recreates an authentic general store, such as it would have been found in the 1930's and 1940's. Over 6,000 items line the counters and shelves. Finally, the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum acts as a tribute to the pre-settler age of Palm Springs. The Agua Caliente Cahuilla Indians were attracted to the area for its hot springs and cool canyons. Artifacts from their history are on display in the museum, as well as photographs and dioramas. Jewelry, music, and souvenirs are for sale, and there is a lush botanical garden for viewing as well.
