Disney Gallery

The Disney Gallery was originally created in July of 1987. It was built to be an attraction and merchandising location. It was a changing exhibit that focused primarily on artwork by Walt Disney Imagineering. The idea for an art gallery was invented by Tony Baxter who redesigned the walkway into the once-apartment, intended for Walt Disney and his brother Roy. Though Walt passed away before the completion of the Royal Suite it was still affectionately nicknamed with him in mind. The Gallery was to allow park guests to visit artwork made for the theme parks. Not only is the Disney Gallery a museum, but it is also the only area in the park that is both an attraction and merchandiser. Tours were given every one to two hours to allow the guests to learn the rich culture of the Disney parks.
The length of the varying exhibits lasted from three months up to 10 years, to keep the gallery new and exciting. Some of the more famous exhibits were “The Disneyland that never was,” dedicated to showing ideas and attractions that were never put into existence. There was also the 100 Mickeys display, which included 100 portraits of Mickey Mouse, Walt Disney’s most famous creation. The art was displayed on varying types of materials, for Walt’s 100th birthday. The last Disney Gallery exhibit was entitled “Inspired by Disney,” which included artwork done by artists who were not Imagineers. It depicted the sights and sounds of their memories from childhood, while visiting Disneyland.
Unfortunately, the Disney Gallery closed on August 7, 2007. There have been rumors that the area will now be used to allow guests to stay one night in the apartment, as a gift giveaway. Other rumors state that it may be used to give the West coast a version of Florida’s Cinderella’s castle. Whatever becomes of the apartment intended for Walt and Roy, the Disney Gallery is sure to be missed by visiting guests daily.
