Sleeping Beauty's Castle

sleeping beauty's castle - 50th anniversary

Serving as the entrance to Fantasyland, Sleeping Beauty’s Castle is part of the imagination of many young girls, imagining being awakened by a handsome prince. While the splendor of the castle itself is based on two different real castles, the imagination of the workers building the castle had to work with brothers Walt and Roy throughout the construction.

To make the spires of the castle sparkle, Walt wanted them plated with gold while Roy was against the idea. Walt sent Roy away on business and in his absence, as the story goes, one spire was plated with gold.

The drawbridge on Sleeping Beauty’s Castle actually works, although it has only been lowered and raised twice. The first time was during the opening of Disneyland on July 17, 1955 and the second time was to unveil the newly refurbished Fantasyland in 1983.

Another Disney princess, Snow White has her own castle but Sleeping Beauty’s digs are more towards the beauty and fairy tale than the potential scary characters that appear with Snow White. Located at the entrance of Fantasyland, Sleeping Beauty’s Castle serves to represent the many early fairy tales brought to life by Walt Disney Productions.

There are some that claim one of the castle’s towers is on backwards due to workers horsing around and others who claim it was turned around at Disney’s request to show off the back of the tower on the front side of the castle. With so many stories abounding about the construction of Disneyland it is often hard to distinguish what is real and what is a fairy tale.
