California State Capitol

Located in Sacramento, California at the intersection of 10th and L Streets is the California State Capitol building, a “working museum” which is a part of the California State Parks system. Visitors may tour the Capitol and become a part of living history as they bear witness to modern lawmaking as well as the relics and lessons of California’s rich past.
The Capitol’s domed rotunda sits between the Senate and the Assembly which make up the two Houses of the Legislature. California’s legislature has made its home in Sacramento since 1869, and much of the history of this time is evident on the walls and in the papers on view at the present day Capitol. Guided tours tell of this history and present visitors with a complete look at the way lawmaking is done in the state on a daily basis. The restored offices of the Secretary of State, Treasurer, and the Governor are all available for touring.
Surrounding the buildings themselves is beautiful Capitol Park, with gardens and trees from all around the United States and the world at large. On display are memorials paying tribute to some of California’s most significant historical events including a Civil War Memorial Grove planted in 1897 with seeds from America’s most famous Civil War battlefields. Also on display is a statue of Father Junipero Serra, a Spanish missionary sent to help colonize California. The California Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the California Veterans Memorial are in place to honor those who have died in American wars.
