California State Railroad Museum

railroad museum entrance

Located in historic Old Sacramento, the California State Railroad Museum is widely regarded as one of the United States’ best and most complete railroad memorials. The California State Railroad Museum is located at the intersection of Second and "I" Streets, and features an array of historic facilities and attractions for tourist and local alike. Perfect for the railroad enthusiast or simply someone wanting to brush up on a major part of California’s god rush era history, the California State Railroad Museum attracts thousands of visitors each year.

The museum is not withheld to only exhibits, but offers a wide range of special events throughout the year. For example, every weekend in the summer months, the museum offers rides behind a steam locomotive on the Museum’s Sacramento Southern Railroad.  Some of the continuing, year round exhibitions include “We’ve Been Working on the Railroad”, a grand look at railroading through the years. Featuring exhibits both new and reissued, the attraction showcases a series of life like figures depicting the various jobs of railroad workers. Think Disney’s animatronics without the animation. Also on the grounds is the Thomas W. Sefton Gallery, a toy train exhibit that is a wonder to behold. More than three thousand square feet of exhibits showcase Mr. Sefton’s extensive collection, including a train layout that brings the meticulous fun of toy railroading to life.

Interested guests may wish to visit during October, when the museum decorates the trains and rechristens them “Spookmotives”. Forty minute rides during this time take visitors along the Sacramento River and offer a unique chance to view Old Sacramento when it is all dressed up for Fall Harvest Days.
