Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park

gold trail grange

Marshall Gold Discovery State Park is in place to remember the origins of the gold rush of 1849 and the time of prosperity for many as they descended on California to seek their fortune. Gold was first discovered in 1848 by a man named James Wilson Marshall, near the American River, while working for a man named John Sutter. This discovery led to the largest mass migration in the history of the West and led to the startling growth of the state and the surrounding states that continued for years to come. The site itself, located in Coloma, California, is today a popular tourist destination in addition to being one of the most important historic sites in America.

Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park aims to preserve the site and its surrounding environment as a true and authentic portrayal of the story that led to California’s early prosperity and the history surrounding it. Available for viewing is a replica of the original Sutter’s sawmill that stood above the discovery site, as well as more than twenty historic buildings such as mines, houses, a school, and store exhibits.

Visitors to the park have the unique opportunity to try panning for gold along the banks of the American River, as well as hike and picnic in the nearby woodlands. California’s first historic monument also resides on the grounds: a statue of Marshall himself, pointing to the site that made him famous.

The park is located in Coloma off Highway 49 between Placerville and Auburn. Special events and exhibits are planned regularly, so visitors should call ahead to see what might be upcoming.
