Sutter Creek

The town of Sutter Creek, California was named for the creek that runs through its borders. The creek itself was named for historical legend John A. Sutter, whose sawmill was the site of the first gold discovery in 1848. With the rush of fortune seekers threatening to destroy his lands, Sutter followed the old maxim, “If you can’t beat em, join em” and became part of the gold rush himself. He arrived in the Sutter Creek area in 1848 with a band of Native Americans and began mining gold along the creek.
Tourists to the area have an abundance of historical and natural sites to take in. The Knight Foundry and the Kennedy Mine are located in the area and offer guided tours. There is also a tradition of wine making surrounding the town of Sutter Creek, where the production of wine dates back to the mid 1800s, where gold prospectors found the perfect climate for the growing of wine grapes.
Other things to see and do include Black Chasm, a beautiful cave which offers forty-five minute walking tours through its calcite formations and rare crystals. Gemstone mining and picnicking are also favorite activities for visitors to the cave. Sutter Gold Mine Tours offer one hour guided tours into an authentic modern mine. Visitors can learn of mining techniques throughout time, and learn a bit about the geology of the area. Finally, tourists can enjoy the Monteverde Store Museum, which has not changed since its closing in 1970.
