Gamble House

The Gamble House, located Pasadena, California, was constructed from 1908 to 1909 as a winter home for David B. Gamble of the Procter and Gamble company. This three-story house is often described as America’s Arts and Crafts masterpiece and has been declared a National Historic Landmark. At present, the Gamble House is under the care of the University Of Southern California School Of Architecture.
Technically, arts and crafts architecture focuses heavily on the use of materials, aesthetics, details and craftsmanship. It is like putting all good things together to come up with a very beautiful and well-defined result. In the case of the Gamble House, the layout of the house was strongly influenced by the traditional Japanese design, teamed with easygoing and spacious design that is common around California.
Different kinds of wood were used in the construction of the Gamble House. A combination of maple, teak, mahogany, oak and Port Orford cedar were used in the different rooms of the house. The different types of wood were placed side by side on floors and walls to create a beautiful contrast of colors, grain and tone. The custom-made furniture also matches the overall design of the house.
The construction of the outdoor space is just as detailed as the interior of the house. Three of the bedrooms have their own sleeping porches, which can be used for sleeping as well as entertaining guests. The main patio located at the back of house has a large koi pond. The arroyo stone paths lead to the rose gardens.
