The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, also known simply as The Huntington, is one of the most interesting educational and research institutions in California. Built amidst 120 acres (49 hectares) of breathtaking gardens, this place is just like a piece of heaven on earth. The Huntington was founded by railroad and read estate developer Henry Edwards Huntington in 1919. It was opened to the public in 1928 and from then on served as one of the best education and research institutions in California.
The Huntington boasts three art galleries and a library that showcase the extensive and magnificent collection of the institutions. Rare books, paintings, sculptures, manuscripts and decorative arts are some of the most interesting things that you can find at The Huntington. There are about 6.5 million manuscripts and about a million rare books. Some of the most famous collections in The Huntington are the Guternberg Bible which dates back to 1455 and the historical documents of Abraham Lincoln, including the manuscripts and papers of the Ward Hill Lamon, the president’s bodyguard. President Lincoln’s documents are considered one of the most extensive account of the life of the greatest president of the country. Moreover, The Huntington is the only library in the world that has the original first two quartos of Hamlet in its collection.
Aside from its extensive collection of rare books and manuscripts, The Huntington’s botanical gardens, which cover 120 acres (49 hectares), have a collection of rare plants from almost all parts of the world.
