Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve

upper newport bay

Upper Newport Bay is one of the most important coastal wetlands in Southern California. Migratory birds flying through the Pacific Flyway every year often stop in this place to rest. According to reports, you can easily spot almost 30,000 birds of different species in Upper Newport Bay on any day during the winter. Aside form being a major stopover for migratory birds, Upper Newport Bay is home to almost 200 species of local birds, including many endangered species. Recognizing the importance of this place in the preservation of many species of birds, the Fish and Game Department, through its Ecological Reserve System, purchased the 527 acres (213 ha) of land in Upper Newport Bay area to create the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve in 1975. In 1982, the 11 acres (5 ha) of land in the Big Canyon were added into the reserve.

Birds are not the only creatures that like to come to Upper Newport Bay. Because it is close to Highway 73, this place is very much accessible to human visitors from Orange County. Since the bay offers a breathing space away from the busy life of the City, many people come to visit to enjoy some bird-watching, kayaking, jogging, fishing, hiking and horseback riding. To accommodate the needs of its human visitors, the park management offers hands-on school tours and scout programs. These programs are aimed at giving children the opportunity to learn the importance of preserving and protecting the environment. The park also offers guided water tours to help the visitors understand the importance of the wetlands.
