The Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAM/PFA), founded in 1970, is a visual arts center located inside the UC Berkeley campus. As one of the largest university art museums in the United States, the Berkeley Art Museum holds an exhaustive collection of more than 14,000 objects and around 10,000 films and videos. Located at the southern edge of the university campus, the Berkeley Art Museum is housed inside a distinctive Modernist building that comprises of administrative and curatorial offices of the art and film departments, art galleries, theater for public programs, storage center for university’s art collection and a film library and study center. The building was designed by Mario Ciampi, an architect from San Francisco.
The Berkeley Art Museum was founded 1963 as a result of donations from Hans Hoffmann, an artist and a teacher. His donation included 45 paintings and $250,000 to the University for the purpose of collecting art. Some of the collections that the art museum holds include historical and contemporary Asian art, early American painting, mid-twentieth century art, conceptual art, contemporary art from around the world, and California and Bay Area art.
The Berkeley Art Museum houses works of some of the most acclaimed modern artists from around the world, including Math Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Albert Bierstadt, Paul Gauguin, Helen Frankenthaler, Jay DeFeo, Joan Brown, Jonathan Borofsky and Shirin Neshat.
Art exhibitions are periodically organized inside the art galleries of the museum for the purpose of presenting historical and contemporary art to California and Bay Area communities. These exhibitions range from classical Asian art to challenging work done by contemporary artists. Also included are exhibitions under the MATRIX program for contemporary art, where recent avant-garde works are displayed. The museum also holds exhibitions based on themes such as Anxious Visions, Surrealist Art, Made in USA, An Americanization in Modern Art, the 50’s and 60’s, Images of Paradise in Islamic Art and Masterworks in Chinese painting.
