Lawrence Hall of Science

lawrence hall of science

Established in 1968, the Lawrence Hall of Science is a public science center located in the Berkeley Hills above the UC Berkeley campus. This science center was established in the honor of Ernest Orlando Lawrence, who was the 1939 Nobel Laureate in Physics from UC Berkeley.

The Lawrence Hall of Science believes in developing model programs through which science and mathematics can be easily communicated to audiences of all ages. This is achieved through development of innovative materials, hands-on exhibits, and school programs, as well as teaching materials and professional development programs for people aged above 35 years. The Lawrence Hall of Science is a significant resource center for children from preschool to high school where they can understand science and mathematics.

Some of the permanent exhibits displayed at Lawrence Hall of Science include the LHS Biology Discovery Lab, the Idea Lab, Math around the World, Pheena the Fin Whale and a huge DNA sculpture. There are also exhibits that make students understand the science behind seismic waves, nanotechnology, and occurrences of various astronomical events. Displayed inside the E.O. Lawrence room is the Nobel Prize that was won by E.O. Lawrence. This was the first Nobel Prize awarded to an American public university.

Another major attraction at the Lawrence Hall of Science is the William Knox Holt Planetarium, which conducts regular stargazing programs and interactive shows for the public. These programs offer a wealth of knowledge about NASA shuttle programs, freefall, satellites, meteors, planets, stars, asteroids and even constellations.

As a part of its education program, the Lawrence Hall of Science has developed various interesting programs. Some of these are EQUALS/FAMILY MATH, Full Option Science System (FOSS), Great Explorations in Math and Science (GEMS), Marine Activities and Resources in Education (MARE), PEACHES, and Science Education for Public Understanding Program (SEPUP). All these programs are regularly updated and resource materials are provided by the museum. Science kits, educational posters and plush toys are also available for visitors at the Discovery Corner Stone.

The Lawrence Hall of Science is situated at an elevation from which the one can view the San Francisco Bay. Apart from that, various other destinations are visible from the Lawrence Hall of Science including the Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge, Alcatraz Island and Angel Island.
