Oakland California Temple

oakland california temple

The Mormon Temple situated in Oakland, California, is a 170-foot marvel constructed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. This is the second Mormon temple built in California and is the only Latter-Day Saints Temple with five spires. Originally named as the Oakland Temple, this Mormon Temple is the 15th Latter-Day Saints temple constructed and the 13th temple that is operational.

There are several interesting features to the Temple. The Oakland Mormon Temple construction was prophesized by the Saints way back in 1847. It was in the dreams of Elder George Albert Smith who saw the vision of a Great White Temple of the Lord being built on East Bay Hills in 1924. The construction of the Temple was announced on May 26, 1962 and was dedicated to the Lord in November 19, 1964 by David O. McKay.

Located on 18 acres of land, the Temple is an architectural marvel exhibiting an Oriental motif. The exterior of the temple has been constructed using reinforced concrete with Sierra White Granite brought from Raymond, California. The north and south parts of the Temple include two decorative friezes. The south side of the Temple portrays a depiction of Christ descending from Heaven to the Nephites of America. The North Side of the Temple has a portrayal that depicts the Savior commissioning His apostles in the Old World and preaching His Gospel to the people.

Surrounded by picturesque surroundings, the Temple has 4 ordinance rooms, 7 sealing rooms and 95,000 square feet of floor space. Situated on top of Oakland Hills, the Temple has been constructed at a place from which one can have a spectacular view of the Bay Area including downtown Oakland, Bay Bridge, Yerba Buena Island, downtown San Francisco and even the Golden Gate Bridge. Ships use the illumination coming from the Mormon Temple as a temporary lighthouse for navigation while coming to dock and land in Oakland and San Francisco ports.

The followers of the Latter-Day Saints believe the Mormon Temple to be a real miracle as it withstood the fierce Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 and the Oakland Hills firestorm in 1991 without even getting a scratch.
