Oakland Museum of California

oakland museum garden

Opened in 1969, the Oakland Museum of California is the only museum in California that has exquisite collections devoted to Art, History and Natural Sciences. Famous for its architectural beauty, the museum was designed by Kevin Roche. Oakland Museum of California is a three-tiered structure exhibiting natural wonders, history, events, art and significant people who were instrumental in transforming present day California.

The interior of Oakland Museum of California is an interesting blend of spacious galleries, terraces, patios, sculpture gardens and ponds. The museum was built with the primary objective of generating a broader and deeper understanding among the people with regard to California’s art, culture, history and environment. For achieving this objective, the museum conducts various exhibitions and educational programs that are accessible and meaningful to an increasingly diverse population of California.

There are various permanent exhibits displayed on the floors of the museum. The most interesting of these is the Gallery of California Art that has around 600 collections dating back to 1800. “California-A Place, A People, A Dream” is another permanent display that houses around 6,000 artifacts illustrating the history and the culture of California. “Walk Across California” is a unique gallery that offers a simulated experience about the ecology of California. This exhibit has around 2,500 specimens and an Aquatic California Gallery. Apart from these, there are several temporary theme-based exhibitions organized in the museum galleries.

Located in downtown Oakland, the Oakland Museum of California can be conveniently reached from Lake Merritt Bark Station and Oakland International Airport. Other attractions that the museum holds include a splendid restaurant and a museum store. A variety of dishes and fast food are available at the restaurant including sandwiches, salads, deserts, pizzas, soups, wine and beer. Live jazz shows are held daily at the restaurant. The museum store has collections that include gifts, California titles, children’s books, educational toys and decorative items.
