Palo Alto

palo alto

Situated in the northwest corner of Santa Clara County is the city of Palo Alto, which is considered as the leader in the development of cutting-edge technology. Located 35 miles south of San Francisco, Palo Alto was named after a majestic coastal redwood tree called El Palo Alto. Spread over an area of approximately 26 square miles, Palo Alto is bordered by San Francisco Bay on the east and the Skyline Ridge of the coastal mountains on the west. Being a significant part of San Francisco Metropolitan Bay Area and Silicon Valley, Palo Alto is an exciting city with a population of 61,200 residents.

Palo Alto is an ancient city with almost 100 years of history. The city was officially incorporated into California State Legislation in 1894. The city contains an ethnically diverse set of population comprising Native Americans, Caucasians, African-Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders and other races.

Recognized as the economic hub of the Silicon Valley, Palo Alto houses the headquarters of several well known companies and research firms including Hewlett-Packard, Agilent Technologies, NYSE, Merrill Lynch, EPRI, Xerox, Roche Bioscience and Wall Street Journal. While the Page Mill Road contains the Stanford Research Park, the Sand Hill Road is popular and famous for its venture capitalists.

One of the unique features of Palo Alto is that it is a full-service municipality that owns and operates its gas, water, electricity, sewer, refuse and storm-drainage facilities that are offered to customers at a very competitive rate. Due to its proximity with the Stanford University, it is said that the community of Palo Alto is highly educated and culturally sophisticated.

Some of the interesting destinations inside Palo Alto include the Palo Alto Library, Arizona Cactus Garden, Cantor Arts Center, Stanford University, Stanford Theater, Palo Alto Art Center, Stanford University Arboretum and the University Avenue.

Due to its strategic location, Palo Alto is easily accessible from anywhere in the U.S. Some of the major surface routes that pass through Palo Alto include the Interstate 280, Highway 101, Highway 84 and Highway 92. Palo Alto is also connected by air. The Santa Clara Transportation Authority operates private bus services within the city of Palo Alto. Train services are also available from San Francisco via Caltrain.
