Sausalito is a quiet and beautiful town situated in Marin County of California. Located north of Golden Gate Bridge on the San Francisco Bay Area, Sausalito was incorporated officially into the California State Legislation in 1893., Sausalito is a small town spread over an area of 5.8 square kilometers and has a population of around 7,330 residents (as per 2000 census).

The name of the city was coined by Spanish explorers in the 18th century after the Saucelito trees that were found in abundance in this region. Sausalito was earlier inhabited mainly by Spaniards and Mexicans. Economic development in this region started with the advent of North Pacific Coast Railroad in 1870s. The northern region of the city called Marinship was once a major ship building site of Bechtel Corp during World War II. Thousands of workers and laborers worked in this area building ships including Liberty ships, tankers and landing crafts.

Ethnically, Sausalito is occupied by Caucasians. However, people of other races such as African-Americans, Native Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders and others are also present in small numbers. Sausalito is a popular weekend destination for tourists due to its picturesque surroundings. People throng to this place from San Francisco either by cycling over the bridge or taking a ferry ride over the San Francisco Bay.

Sausalito has various interesting places to offer its visitors. Apart from the luxurious waterfront across the Bay, Sausalito is also known for its shopping and dining experience that ranges from exclusive boutiques, street side cafes, galleries, yacht clubs, shops, hotels and fine restaurants.

Sausalito Artists Open Studio located in the ICB building is the largest art source and art gallery in the city of Sausalito. The Bay Model Visitors Center located in the Marinship area has exhibits and tours that provide scientists, educators and visitors an opportunity to experience the San Francisco Bay and Delta region at a single glance. Another interesting feature of Sausalito is the annual Sausalito Art Festival, which is held on every Labor Day weekend. This event is a three-day long festival that attracts more than 50,000 visitors and features works of several artists from around the world. This prestigious event is sponsored by Sausalito Chamber of Commerce.
