Stanford University

Located between San Francisco and San Jose in the heart of Silicon Valley, Stanford University is the world’s leading research and teaching institution situated in Stanford, California. Located adjacent to the city of Palo Alto, this university is one of the largest private institutions spread over an area of 37 miles.
Stanford University has an illustrious history. The University was established by Leland Stanford, who was a railroad magnate and California Governor. Stanford University was initially named as Leland Stanford Junior University, in memory of his late son, Leland Stanford Jr., who died of typhoid at the age of 16.
Stanford University offers a variety of degrees under several academic disciplines. About 6,700 undergraduate and 8000 graduate students have enrolled at the University that comprises of around 1,700 distinguished faculty members. The faculty includes 18 Nobel Laureates, 4 Pulitzer Prize winners, 7 Wolf Foundation Prize winners, 135 members of National Academy of Sciences and 3 Presidential Medal of Freedom award winners. Residential-based education is given high priority at the institution. The residential complexes include dormitories, row-houses, co-ops, fraternities and sororities. Faculty members are housed in faculty housing.
Stanford University is located amidst pristine surroundings. Some of the landmarks inside the University include the Main Quad, Memorial Church, and Cantor Center for Visual Arts, Stanford Mausoleum, Angel of Grief, Hoover Tower, Rodin Sculpture Garden, Arizona Cactus Garden, Stanford University Arboretum, Papua New Guinea Sculpture Garden, Hanna-Honeycomb House and Lou Henry-Herbert Hoover House. Apart from these, there are certain other interesting places located outside the University. The most important of them is the Lagunita, which is home to the endangered California Tiger Salamander. Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve and the Hopkins Marine Station are other interesting places worth a visit.
Stanford Research Center, Stanford University Medical Center, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies are some of the renowned institutes affiliated to Stanford University.
Life at Stanford is a memorable experience. Apart from having a vibrant artistic and musical community, the University also has a popular dance community. Various performances and events are organized by these communities periodically that are enjoyed by hundreds of students, thousands of alumni and visitors.
