The University of California, Berkeley, better known as UC Berkeley or Cal, is the oldest of the ten campuses that are affiliated with University of California. This campus is a public educational research university that was founded in 1868 as a result of merger between private College of California and the public Agricultural, Mining and Mechanical Arts College.

Spread over an area of 1,232 acres, UC Berkeley offers around 7,000 courses in nearly 300 undergraduate and graduate programs under 130 academic departments that have been organized into 14 unique schools and colleges. UC Berkeley is a premier research institute with 61 Nobel Laureates among its faculty. In addition, the UC Berkeley faculty has 4 field medalists in Mathematics, 3 Pulitzer Prize winners, 28 MacArthur Fellowships, 92 Sloan Fellowships, 7 Wolf prizes, 384 Guggenheim Fellowships and 9 James S. McDonnell Foundation Awards.

The UC Berkeley physical sciences faculty has the distinction of having worked on the Manhattan Project, the team that developed the atom bomb during World War II. Other significant breakthroughs include the invention of the cyclotron, isolation of the polio virus, developing Bell’s Theorem, the discovery of the anti-proton, creating the BSD Unix computer operating system and discovering numerous transuranic elements on the periodic table including seaborgium, plutonium, berkelium, lawrencium and californium.

Located on the campus are some of the most famous research laboratories and science centers in the world, including the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the Space Sciences Laboratory, the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) and the Lawrence Hall of Science.

The architectural design of the UC Berkeley Campus was given by John Galen Howard. All the main buildings of the campus, including the Hearst Memorial Mining Building, Doe Memorial Library, California Hall, Wheeler Hall and Sather Tower, have been built in the classical Beaux-Arts style. Other non-academic buildings such as North Gate Hall, Dwinelle Annex and Stephens Hall have been constructed in the Collegiate Gothic style.

The surroundings of the UC Berkeley campus are a nature lover’s delight, with the Strawberry Canyon passing through the campus. The campus contains numerous wooded areas with trees existing since 1879.
