California African American Museum (CAAM)

The California African American Museum (CAAM) is one of the best places to learn about the merging of cultures. Established in 1981, it is one of the latest additions to the museums inside Exposition Park. This building used to occupy a portion of the California Science Center before it was transferred to its own building in July 1984.
CAAM occupies a 44,000 square-foot (4,100 sq. m.) facility. It has three full-size exhibition galleries, including some of the finest nineteenth century academic and naturalistic paintings. Aside from these galleries, the museum also has a 14,000 square-foot (1,300 sq. m.) sculpture court, a theater gallery, a conference center/special events room, and an archive and research library, which is accessible to visitors. The private areas of the museum include the administrative offices, the artifact storage area, and the exhibit design area, where the employees of the museum work.
In 2001, the museum was closed to the public for some major renovations, including the installation of CCTV security system, hardwood floor installation, dry-pipe suppression system, electronic doors, the installation of a new roof and skylights, and the development of a permanent interactive education and engagement center. The museum opened again in 2003.
At present, the museum holds weekly events to entertain its visitors. The Sunday programs are particularly interesting. The education department of the museum is also offering programs to enhance the cultural interests of individuals and groups of Afro-American people in the country. Lectures, trainings, seminars, film-showing symposia, and other events are currently being offered by the education department of the museum.
