Chiat/Day Mojo Advertising Agency

chiat/day mojo advertising agency

The Chiat/Day/Mojo building in Venice is home to one of the country’s leading advertising agencies, and is one of the most remarkable architectural constructs in Los Angeles. The building is in no way a museum, and visitors will not be invited inside for a tour, but it is well worth a look if you are in the area. It was built between 1985 and 1991 by renowned superstar architect Frank Gehry. Three different architectural styles were used for the Main Street facade, but by far the most audacious of these is the massive sculpture of a pair of binoculars that functions as the entrance to the car park. The binoculars themselves are not only beautiful, but functional as well, and hold two conference rooms, with the eyepieces of the binoculars acting as natural skylights for the rooms below.

Together with the magnificent binocular centerpiece is a cluster of sculptural columns and a curved screen wall with imagery reflecting the Agency’s proximity to the beach and Pacific Ocean. The binoculars, the columns, and the wall were the design of architect Frank Gehry, along with architects Claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen. Born in Canada in 1929, Gehry has practiced architecture his entire life, always with the belief that architecture is art. His many projects around the world have emphasized this belief, such as the Weisman Art Museum, the Dancing House in Prague, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and the Experience Music Project. Some have even criticized Gehry for an emphasis of style over function, a charge he does not seem eager to dismiss.

The 75,000 square foot (7,000 sq. m.) office on Main St, in Venice is just one of the great American examples of his work, and is definitely worth a visit for any tourists interested in architecture, art, or simply with the desire to see something unique and amazing.
