El Pueblo de Los Angeles

olvera street market

El Pueblo de Los Angeles is recognized as the birthplace of the City of Los Angeles, California. As the oldest section of the city, this place had now been declared as a Historic Park called El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument. The 44-acre (18 ha) historic park is bounded by Arcadia, Spring, Alameda and Macy Streets. The center of the park is located in the historical Olvera Street, which has now become a colorful Mexican place.

The buildings around El Pueblo still bear the designs which were famous in the 17th century. Five of the most famous buildings in the area now serve as museums showcasing the history of the place. Some of the oldest structures in this area are the Avila Adobe house built in 1818 (known as the oldest residence in the city), the Town Plaza built in 1815, Old Plaza Church also known as the Our Lady Queen of the Angeles Church, built in 1822, the Pico house, the Sepulveda house built in 1887, and the Plaza Firehouse built in 1884.

El Pueblo is considered as one of the tourist attractions of the city. The frequent reenactments of Mexican culture in the old Plaza of El Pueblo and the many seasonal festivities in the area often draw crowds to this place. Close to 2 million people come to El Pueblo every year to reminisce the past and get acquainted with the origins of this famous City of Angels. The many statues, murals and informative sign post around El Pueblo help visitors understand the culture of the place.
