Exposition Park

Exposition Park is one of the oldest landmarks in Los Angeles. Established in 1876 as an agricultural park, this park used to serve as the showcase of agricultural and horticultural products. During this time, the 160-acre (65 ha) park served as an agricultural fairground. Farmers come to this place during designated days to sell their harvest.
Although the park became the property of the State of California in 1880, it was reverted back to private hands sometime in the 1890s. Subsequently, the place deteriorated and people of questionable characters started making the park their home. The character of the place deteriorated as gambling and drinking became prevalent.
Appalled by the deterioration of the park and the presence of people of questionable character in the area, professors and parents of students from the nearby University of Southern California moved to convert the park into something that could be useful to education. The ownership of the park was later on restored to the state in 1913. Since then, the park became the home of the famous landmarks of Los Angeles, namely the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, the California Science Center (formerly known as the California Museum of Science and Industry), the Exposition Park Rose Garden, the California African American Museum (CAAM) , the Los Angeles Swim Stadium, the Exposition Park Intergenerational Community Center, and the Science Center School and Amgen Center for Science and learning, which was formerly known as the California National Guard Armory.
