Farmers Market

For people who are fond of eating and watching people, the Farmers Market is one of the best places to be. Many famous actors and actress can be seen dining and shopping here day in and day out. Rumor has it that James Dean had his last meal in the Farmers Market before he drove off and died in a car accident a few hours later.
Established in 1934 in an expanse of empty land at Gilmore Island as a trading place for farm products, the Farmers Market has a very colorful history. At the start, farmers merely use the tailgates of their vehicles to display their produce. At that time, the spaces of the dirt parking lot served as the market place. Farmers who want to sell their products drew outlines using chalks around their vehicles to establish their territories. The atmosphere was so casual and friendly that many people soon flocked to the parking lot on designated days. Nobody really thought at that time that the Farmers Market would become of one of the most well known places in the country.
As more and more people discovered Farmers Market as a good place to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers and other farm produce, structures were erected in the area. Today, hundreds of shops and restaurants dot the area. An annual Fall Festival, A Mardi Gras celebration, the Gilmore Heritage Auto Show, St. Patrick’s Day, and Cinco de Mayo are some of the interesting annual events at the Farmers market.
