The Getty Center in Los Angeles is a world renowned research institute and is home to the J. Paul Getty Museum, one of the newest and finest art museums in the country. The Center is located in Brentwood, and is free to the public. Designed by architect Richard Meier, it cost $1.2 billion to create and is considered the most prominent and important museum of the J. Paul Getty Trust, an art endowment of over $3 billion. Art aficionados and amateur appreciaters from around the world can appreciate the museum’s large collection of classical sculpture and art, featuring paintings and decorative art, as well as photographs. The majority of the museum’s holdings date back to before the 20th century, with the obvious exception of the photography exhibits.

The paintings on view include “Irises” by Vincent Van Gogh, an oil on canvas dating to 1889, when the master painter was self-institutionalized in a French asylum, and “King of France and Navarre” by Hyacinthe Riguad, who was considered the preeminent portrait painter in France during the reign of Louis XIV.

Outside the museum is the 134,000 square foot Central Garden, designed by artist Robert Irwin. It is a beautiful tree-lined footpath that connects the Museum with the Research Institute for the History of Art and the Humanities. Planted on both sides of the path are rich grasses and bougainvillea. A stream passes along this path and ends in a cascading waterfall and a pool within which azaleas float along the surface. Surrounding this pool is a multitude of gardens, each with a separate plant variety.
