Golden Triangle

beverly hills

The Golden Triangle is the unofficial moniker for the collection of three adjacent districts in Los Angeles. These three neighborhoods are Bel-Air, Holmby Hills, and Beverly Hills, which is the only one of the three that is actually a separate incorporated city. The area gets its name from the impression (and, to some degree, reality) of affluence the neighborhoods share, home as they are to some of the wealthiest residents in California, if not the country. Movie stars, producers, musicians, CEO’s, and heiresses all call the Golden Triangle home.

Bel-Air is on the west side of the city and was founded by Alphonzo Bell in 1923. It is a wealthy and exclusive community, guarded by giant gates (though these gates are entirely for show). Homes within the community range from the modest to the opulent. The most exclusive of the homes are directly off the main entrances to Bel Air and the country club. These lower Bel-Air homes have been known to sell for more than $20 million. Among its most famous residents were former President Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy.

Holmby Hills is home to many of the most powerful names in the Hollywood production industry, including Aaron Spelling and Interscope Records pioneer Jimmy Iovine. The world famous Playboy Mansion is also within this community, with its owner, Playboy magazine founder, Hugh Hefner.

Beverly Hills is perhaps the best known of these communities, and enjoys what is quite possibly the most distorted perception. Around the world, the area is known as the ritziest and most affluent of almost anywhere in the world, but the reality is slightly different. While it is certain that some of the most expensive homes in all of Los Angeles have Beverly Hills addresses, this does not account for the other 90% of the town. There are several areas in LA more wealthy, although Beverly Hills is not a slum by any stretch of the imagination.
