Grand Central Market

grand central market

Located on the ground floor of the historic Homer Laughlin Building in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, the Grand Central Market is the largest and oldest open-air market in the city. The market began its operation in 1917 and has been going strong ever since. Customers are greeted by friendly stallholders selling various fruits and vegetables, often giving away free samples.

Most of the Grand Central Market's customers are Hispanic, so signs are in both English and Spanish. The market features a wide variety of exotic produce from various regions of Latin America. The market also features much in the way of fresh local seafood as well as a wide variety of meats, including goats heads and tripe. There are also herb stands, for those who wish to try various forms of alternative medicine.

The Grand Central Market also features several cafes and food stands. The China Cafe, which features chow mein and chop suey, is one of the most popular of these. Another fun place to eat is the Chapalita Tortelleria, where one can watch the cooks make corn flour tortillas. There are also several other good Mexican food stalls.
