Los Angeles City Hall

los angeles city hall

Built in 1928, this 28-story structure was the tallest in Los Angeles until 1964, since until the late 1950s no others were allowed to be more than 12 stories high. Sand from every county in California and water from each of the state's 21 missions were used in the mortar of its construction.

Although now dwarfed by several nearby buildings, City Hall's distictive architecure still stands out. Fans of the Superman TV series will recognize it as building depicting The Daily Planet, Lois and Clark's office building.

City Hall features a beautiful rotunda with an inlaid-tile dome and superb acoustics. Eight figures surrounding the dome represent each of the eight concerns of the city government: education, health, law, art, service, government, protection, and trust.

Visitors can take a 45-minute tour of the building, including an ascent to the tower, which offers a superb panormaic view.
