Los Angeles

los angeles

Los Angeles, with a population of more than 3.8 million people, is the most populated city in California and the second most populated city in the United States, behind only New York. Without dispute, the city is a melting pot of ethnicity and a major hub of business and technology, as well as the world’s entertainment capital. The city was born of Spanish decent and settled by Gaspar de Portola and missionary Juan Crespi in 1769. It came into American holdings in 1848 and has thrived as one of the United States’s two most important cities.

It was in the 1920s that Los Angeles became the destination for both the motion picture industry and the aviation industry, and this influx started an economical boom that arguably has continued to this day. Today, a great percentage of films, television, and print media is originated in Los Angeles and exported around the world.

Watts, Venice Beach, Hollywood, Bel-Air, and Brentwood are just a few of the smaller communities within the city of Los Angeles as a whole. Each offers its distinct and diverse flavor to the city, with some areas known for their affluence and wealth just as others have become havens for poverty and gang violence.

Those visiting Los Angeles have plenty to see and do, and could spend months in the city without ever doing the same thing twice, depending on your personal tastes and preferences. Chinatown and Little Tokyo offer shopping and dining with a unique ethnic flavor. The Disney Concert Hall and the Kodak Theater are popular landmarks, as is the Griffith Observatory, famous for being the setting of the James Dean classic, “Rebel Without a Cause”.

Los Angeles is the home of one of the finest institutions of higher learning in the country in the form of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and plays host to the professional sports teams the Dodgers, the Lakers, the Clippers, and the Kings.
