Mann's Chinese Theatre

mann's chinese theater

Mann's Chinese Theater (formerly Grauman's) is one of the most famous landmarks in Los Angeles. Built in 1927, it is one of the original Hollywood movie theaters. The exterior is decorated with numerous Chinese artifacts, such as temples, pagodas, dragons and lions. The interior is equally spectacular, though it is only open to movie stars.

Perhaps the theater is best known for the impressed footprints, handprints, and autographs in the surrounding cement sidewalk. There are many stories of how this tradition began, such as silent-screen movie star Norma Talmadge accidentally stepping in the wet cement and stonemason Jean Klossner leaving his handprint there for posterity. However the custom originated, theater owner Sid Grauman liked the idea and invited several other celebrities to do the same. Movie stars continue to leave their mark in the courtyard to this date.
