Museum of Television and Radio

museum of television and radio

Now better known as The Paley Center for Media, the Museum of Television and Radio is located in Beverly Hills at 465 North Beverly Dr., not far from Rodeo Drive and just a block away from City Hall by way of Santa Monica Boulevard. The Center was founded by William Paley in 1975 as a way to preserve the cultural and artistic importance the media has had on America’s collective conscience since its inception. It was Paley’s fear that these programs would be lost to time, and he felt this would represent a great tragedy for our culture. Thanks in part to the efforts of this museum, this is no longer of great concern.

The museum is home to more than 140,000 programs which span almost a century of television and radio history including news programs, documentaries, sports, and even an archive of commercial advertising. It has not only archived programming from the United States, but from at least seventy countries from around the world, expanding the representation of media to all cultures.

Visitors to the museum may choose a program from the Paley Center’s vast archives and then watch (or listen, in the case of a radio show) the program on a private console. There are also screening theaters, where a large number of people can gather and watch programming chosen for the day by the Center. These programs can range from Saturday Night Live archives to a recorded David Bowie concert.
