Museum of Tolerance

The Museum of Tolerance is located in Los Angeles and is a multicultural museum dedicated to showing people the effects of prejudice and racism on our society and on cultures around the world. With exhibits displaying the travesties that have befallen many of the world’s ethnicities, as well as interactive rooms and showcases predominately concerned with everyday bigotry, the museum’s lofty goal is to eradicate this hatred from the world. Whether or not you consider yourself prejudiced, the museum is a worthwhile trip, and may serve as an illuminating and educational experience for young and old alike.
Sponsored by the Simon Wiesenthal Center, the museum opened in 1993, and is trafficked by more than 350,000 guests a year. The centerpiece of the museum is the Holocaust Section, a look at one of the greatest horrors the world has ever known. Among other things, visitors are placed in groups to examine and reflect on their place in the travesties during and preceding World War II. There is also Holocaust survivor testimony. The exhibit, and indeed, the museum as a whole, is not a lighthearted activity, and should be undertaken with the understanding of such.
Because of the nature of its mission and showcase, the museum is not simply a building of galleries and wall paintings. The exhibits are interactive, and often use a multimedia approach to get the message across. Some have criticized the museum for its hamhandedness, as well as “dumbing down” their approach to reach the so-called MTV generation. The museum, however, defends itself against these criticisms by claiming it aims to use whatever tools necessary to get people to think.
Hours of the museum vary, so call ahead before visiting. At the time of the writing of this article, most of the museum was off limits and closed for a full updating of the exhibits. Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for children. Advance purchase is recommended by the museum’s website.
