Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is located in Exposition Park in downtown Los Angeles. Established in 1913 as the Museum of History, Science and Art, this museum has fitted marble walls and a columnaded rotunda that made it a distinctive landmark of the area. In 1961, the museum was officially divided in two as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Los Angeles Museum of History and Science. In 1965, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art moved to its new building on Wilshire Boulevard, leaving the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County as the sole occupant of the old building.
Over the years, the Natural History of Museum of Los Angeles County evolved to become the largest museum in the western part of the United States. Additional constructions around the old building were made in the past several years. Fortunately, the architects and builders preserved the original structures of the building, so most of the old areas of the building are still intact. In fact, the old dome rotunda still looks almost the same as it used to back in 1913 when the museum first opened to the public.
Currently, its collection includes about 33 million specimens and artifacts from different places throughout the country and around the world. These specimens cover a span of 4.5 billion years of history and have been used to uncover some of the greatest secrets of humankind. For people who would like to learn more about natural history, the museum devotes three floors as permanent exhibit area. These floors are divided into different subjects. Top crowd-drawers are the exhibits on dinosaurs, the insect zoo, pre-Colombian cultures, and animal habitants.
