Rodeo Drive

via rodeo

Rodeo Drive is located in Beverly Hills, California, and is one of the most famous shopping districts in the world. Renowned for its upscale shops, its reputation is practically legendary, having been featured in numerous entertainment programs and motion pictures, most notably the 1990 smash hit Pretty Woman with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere.

The street itself stretched from S. Beverwil Drive to Sunset Boulevard in the north, but the primary shopping district the term colloquially identifies is little more than a three block stretch between Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevard. The median of the road was a horse path until the early 1950s, which is where the street got its name (though the road is pronounced “Ro-DAY-oh”, unlike the bull riding sport). The shopping district did not come into being until the 1970s, where it soon became not only a popular shopping destination for the affluent locals but a world famous tourist destination.

Retailers that take up residence on Rodeo Drive include Giorgio Armani, Christian Dior, Buccellati, Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Harry Winston, Prada, Versace, and many more. It is also home to Bijan, what some have called the most expensive store in the world. An appointment to shop is required, and the average customer can expect to spend somewhere in the neighborhood of $100,000. While the shops are, by and large, lavishly expensive, feeling out of place should not be a concern to the more budget conscious tourist. Rodeo Drive and its shops have long been accustomed to out of towners looking for the filming location of Pretty Woman and Beverly Hills Cop.
