Southwest Museum

The Southwest Museum atop Mount Washington in Los Angeles has one of the largest collections of Native American art in the country. The museum was founded by Charles Fletcher Lummis, who also designed and built the nearby Lummis House. During his travels through the American Southwest in the 19th century, Lummis became one of the first whites to appreciate Native American history and culture. He donates some of his personal collection to the museum's collection.
Artifacts in the museum range from prehistoric times to the present day and from Alaska to South America. The museum is organized into sections corresponding to different geographic regions, including California, the Southwest, the Plains, and the Northwest Coast. There is also a large, impressive section devoted to basketry and another used for temporary exhibits.
