Humboldt Redwoods State Park

humboldt redwoods

Humboldt Redwoods State Park is located in the heart of the redwood forest region in Humboldt County in Northern California. It is some 30 miles (approximately 50 km) south of Eureka.

The park was established in 1921 by the Save-the-Redwoods League and today it is spread across nearly 60,000 acres (24,000 ha) in the Eel River Basin. Humboldt Redwoods State Park is home to one of the largest stretches of uncut coast redwood forest in the world with more than 17,000 acres (7,000 ha) of old redwood trees.

Humboldt Redwoods State Park is home to the second tallest living redwood. The tree is called Stratosphere Giant, and when measured in 2004, it was 370.2 feet (112.83 m) in height. Incidentally, the Stratosphere Giant was the tallest known living redwood tree until 2006, when Hyperion was discovered in Redwood National Park.

Humboldt Redwoods State Park is easily accessible by Route 101. The amazing and awe-inspiring Avenue of the Giants runs through it.

The area of the Humboldt Redwoods State Park is home to a lot of flora and fauna, including the anadromous fish. The park offers a variety of activities for all ages. You have the choice between camping, wildlife watching, swimming, fishing and hiking.

The park receives 65 inches (165 cm) or more rainfall each year. It usually rains between October and May while June and July are generally dry. With fog both in the morning and evening, you can sure that you will feel cool in the river basin. However, the fog disappears by noon.

The park offers developed campgrounds at Burlington, Albee Creek and Hidden Springs. These campsites are extremely popular with families. Each campsite has a picnic table and a fire ring. Treated water is available along special leveled areas for tents. The campsites have coin-operated showers and flush toilets. RVs and trailers are also allowed at the campsites.

Unfortunately, there are no cabins within the Humboldt Redwoods State Park, but there is accommodation available in the nearby towns.
