Loomis Museum

Founded on May 6, 1907, Lassen Volcanic National Monument is a rare geological phenomenon consisting of all four types of volcanoes found in the world. Spread over an area of 106,000 acres (430 sq. km.), this monument was elevated to the status of National Park on August 9, 1916. Located on the northern side of the park is the Loomis Museum. This museum is spread on a sprawling 40-acre (16 ha) campus.
The Mae Loomis Memorial museum was established in 1927 by Benjamin F. Loomis and his wife in the fond memory of their daughter. Situated adjacent to the beautiful Manzanita Lake, the Loomis Museum is a popular California tourist destination.
The museum is well-known for its numerous artifacts and exhibits. Located inside the museum are the geological specimens of the 1914 eruption of Lassen Peak, photographs of the eruption taken by Benjamin F. Loomis from 1914 to 1917, hands-on learning exhibits about the eruption, and numerous photographs of the resulting damage. Also displayed inside the museum are the most extensive collection of artifacts that portray the life and culture of the local Native Americans.
A large auditorium is also present inside the museum that screens two 15-minute video presentations on the subject of the volcanic eruption of Lassen Peak and its aftermath. The Association Bookstore is the main sales outlet in the museum, containing an extensive collection of educational and interpretative books, maps, trail guides, videos, posters and postcards that glorify the history and scenic wonders of the park. Also present in the shop are various other items including decorative candles, soaps, interactive games, and crafts made from recycled materials.
The Mae Loomis Museum is governed by the Lassen Loomis Museum Association, a non-profit private organization which is dedicated to aid in research, interpretation and also to provide educational experience to visitors coming to the National Park.
