Siskiyou County is a popular tourist destination known for its abundant natural resources and rich wildlife. Apart from the magnificent Mount Shasta, this region is also bestowed with lush green forests, deep valleys, sparkling rivers and beautiful lakes. Siskiyou County offers a wide range of outdoor activities and adventure sports to the tourists, including kayaking, swimming, fishing, trekking, camping, rafting and mountaineering.  Apart from these, seasonal sports such as dog sledding and cross-country skiing are also available during the winter. However, the most popular outdoor activity during all seasons in this region is gold mining or gold panning.

Gold mining has always been a part of history in Siskiyou County. Located in this region are six major rivers: the Klamath, the Salmon, the Sacramento, the Scott, McCloud and Shasta. All of these rivers are known to carry heavy gold deposits. Millions of dollars worth of gold have been retrieved from these rocky rivers during the past. Thus, gold mining is a favorite activity of the tourists who visit this region.

The most interesting aspect of gold panning in this region is that anyone could do it for fun and one doesn’t require any professional degree. There are various gold mining communities that are operating in the region and offer primary education and training pertaining to gold panning. The most popular among them is the Happy Camp community that offers The New 49ers’ Recreational Gold Mining Program.

The most precious piece of advice that these camps offer is that gold mining should always be done in such areas where people have frequently unearthed gold during the past. Being 19 times heavier than water, gold tends to settle down at the bottom of the water body. So, the most common locations where one can hit upon gold is either in the slow moving waters, around stream bends or inside rock crevices. The camps also provide the tourists with the basic equipment required to fish out gold such as a shovel, a gold pan, tweezers, a paint brush and a tiny jar. One could find gold by patiently panning the gravel, sand and sediments of the river. All one needs to strike a fortune is a lot or patience, slight practice and of course, a stroke of luck!
