Weaverville

Weaverville’s history dates back to 1850, when the California Gold Rush began. Weaverville is located at the foot of the Trinity Alps Wilderness. Once approximately 2,000 Chinese immigrants lived in and around Weaverville to mine gold, and the town had the distinction of having its very own Chinatown.
Weaverville is located on Highway 299W, 50 miles (80 km) west of Redding. This picturesque town is still reminiscent of the old days. Vsitors get transported back to the Gold Rush era with the tree-lined streets and red brick buildings with white spiral staircases.
Many of the historical buildings in Weaverville are from the 1850s. Many of the red brick buildings have the unique feature of being made from wood and tin, which has resulted in fires in the early years that nearly burned this now-historical town to the ground.
Weaverville has managed to keep its Old West ambience with its old saloons and restaurants. In addition, it has several newer buildings, from art galleries to modern day stores offering the local craftsmen’s and artists’ work. The most popular event in Weaverville is held on the first Saturday of each month. This is the Art Cruise, during which one can enjoy art shows.
A visit to the Jake Jackson Museum and Historical Park is a must when in Weaverville. The Weaverville Joss House and Taoist Temple is one of the few remaining structures from the time of the Chinese immigrants and is now a California State Park. This temple. along with many other historical buildings, can be found in the historic district of town.
Weaverville also offers some of the best hiking trails in the US. The Weaverville Basin Trail is fantastic for mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding. Maps of the trail system are easily available from local retailers.
The Trinity River in Weaverville is great for white water rafting and kayaking. Once you finish that, you can go antique shopping in the numerous shops located downtown or just relax in a restaurant.
Weaverville is a wonderful place to go antique shopping, browse at the museum, and have a nice lunch on your way to the white water rafting or kayaking at the Trinity River.
